This past Thursday the Gilbert Classical Academy boys soccer team faced the Coolidge Bears and lost by a score of 5-4 in the first round of the 3A Conference play-in tournament. This is the first time in the history of GCA soccer that the boys have made it to the post season tournament so just getting there was quite an accomplishment and honor. Earlier the Spartans had tied the Bears 3-3 in double-overtime when they played each other during the regular season. The boys played with an abundance of heart and determination. It was really entertaining to watch the amazing plays made on the field. Senior Cam Edenfield made 2 goals and 1 assist during crucial times of the contest. Additionally freshman Steven Yamomoto contributed 2 beautiful goals. Leading in steals was senior defender Ryan Barakat with 28. Senior goalie Jorge Aceves had 15 saves for the game. Noteably freshman Adam Barakat and junior Alper Ozturk had 1 awesome assist each. With 15 seconds left to go on the clock one of the Coolidge players put in a goal to clench the victory. It was heartbreaking for the Spartans. With the season coming to an end the GCA Spartan boys have much to be proud of. They were members of a team with the most wins in GCA boys soccer history. Additionally they were members of a team that made it into the playoffs for the first time in school history. Congratulations on a job well done and a memorable season!
