Winter Season Try out Dates

November 23, 2020

GPS Coaches and Parents,

After multiple conversations with health professionals and state officials (including  Dr. Cara Christ, Director of the Arizona Department of Health and Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction, Kathy Hoffman) the AIA has determined that high school Winter sports will begin competition on January 5, 2021 with some stipulations and guidelines that are different from the guidelines for fall sports.  High school winter tryouts will begin November 30th and junior high tryouts are set to begin December 7th.  Coaching pay will be submitted to begin on those dates.  Winter seasons at both high schools and junior highs will have a reduced number of games.

The AIA Covid-19 guideline changes for the 2020-21 winter season which will be followed by GPS high schools and junior highs are:

  1. No fans at any practices or contest until the AIA Covid-19 metrics are met.  Anyone dropping off or picking up athletes at practices or games should remain in their vehicle at all times.

2)  Schools are not allowed to hold any scrimmages against other schools.

3)  Schools may only participate in district sponsored tournaments.

4)  Competing and practicing with outside groups or teams is highly

discouraged as we are trying to minimize athletes’ exposure to the

coronavirus.  Coaches and athletes who participate in competition with

teams from outside of Arizona may be required to stay away from all

school practices and contests for a minimum of 14 days from the date they

last participated with that outside group.

We are excited about the opportunity to begin the winter sports season and will need your help and support in following these new guidelines in order to ensure that our students are able to continue participating and complete their winter sports seasons.  Please feel free to contact the District Athletic Department if you have any questions regarding winter sports.

Thank you for your help and cooperation.

Sincerely,

GPS District Administration
